A 2014 column arguing that soccer viewership proves the wrong people were let in got republished mid-tournament.
Two days before the final, Coulter republished a June 2014 column under the header “FLASHBACK: Against Soccer” and the subtitle “I was ahead of my time.” It argues that any rise in American soccer viewing comes from “the demographic switch effected by Teddy Kennedy’s 1965 immigration law,” that no American whose great-grandfather was born here watches soccer, and that one can hope “these new Americans” will drop the “soccer fetish” along with learning English.
It reads as a joke about a sport and it's built on a claim about people: that Americans with the wrong ancestry aren't really Americans, and that you can tell by what they watch.
We're counting the republication, not the original. A decade-old column put back in front of an audience during the week American soccer viewership peaked is a choice about when, and it's the choice that gave the argument a new audience.
